About The Great Mall of the Great Plains
The Great Mall of the Great Plains was a large outlet shopping center located at 20700 West 151st Street in Olathe, Kansas, a suburb situated southwest of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Olathe is primarily a suburban region with residential neighborhoods and commercial developments, well connected by highways and major roads, making the mall accessible to local residents and visitors from the broader Kansas City area. The location is inland, with no nearby beaches, and the surrounding area is typical of suburban Midwestern communities with a mix of retail, dining, and residential zones.
Opened in 1997, The Great Mall of the Great Plains was once the largest outlet mall in Kansas, featuring over 150 stores arranged in a half-mile racetrack layout. The mall offered a diverse mix of outlet stores that included fashion apparel, footwear, sports equipment, home goods, and some luxury brand outlets. Anchor tenants over the years included department stores like Dillard's and discount retailers such as Marshalls. Specialty stores ranged from sporting goods outlets to casual clothing brands, providing a broad shopping experience aimed at value-conscious consumers.
In addition to retail, the mall provided various services and amenities typical of large shopping centers. These included multiple dining options, from fast food to casual sit-down restaurants, ample parking facilities to accommodate high visitor volumes, and family-friendly amenities such as amusement centers and mini golf at certain points in its history. The mall’s layout and services were designed to cater to shoppers seeking discounted brand-name merchandise in a convenient suburban setting.
The Great Mall of the Great Plains ceased operations and closed permanently in September 2015 after experiencing years of decline in occupancy and foot traffic. The mall was subsequently demolished by early 2017. Although redevelopment plans were announced, they did not materialize, and the site was later acquired by Garmin Ltd. for corporate expansion. As such, the mall no longer operates, and the location has transitioned away from retail use.
